Why I built it

The architecture review room is rarely the problem. The preparation leading up to it usually is.

A recurring pattern in complex technology environments: an architect, a solution lead, or a project team has done genuine work on a proposal. They know the technical shape of the solution. They have thought about the risks. They have a view on the options. But when the review begins, the questions land in a different order than expected. The decision rationale is in a slide deck. The risks are in a spreadsheet. The NFRs are in a requirements document. The security considerations are in a separate email thread. The team spends the first half of the session pulling the picture together rather than discussing it.

This is not a failure of knowledge. It is a failure of structure. The information exists. It is not assembled in the right shape for review.

The Architecture Readiness Pack is a single working document designed to fix that. It pulls together everything a reviewer needs to understand a proposal — in the order they need to see it, at the depth that makes the decision visible.

Architecture is decision clarity

There is a simple principle behind this pack: architecture is not about diagrams. It is about decision clarity.

A good architecture review makes the decision visible. It surfaces the options that were considered and the options that were not. It names the risks and who owns them. It shows what was traded off and why. It records the assumptions that underpin the recommendation and identifies which of those assumptions need validation before the decision becomes irreversible.

When a review fails to produce a clear outcome — when an ARB defers, or a sign-off is withheld, or the conversation becomes circular — it is almost always because the decision is not yet visible. The proposal is present. The decision is not.

The pack is structured around making that decision visible before the review begins, not during it.

What is inside the pack

The pack covers the full set of review dimensions that a serious architecture review needs to address. The sections are not a checklist to complete mechanically — they are prompts to think with. An architect filling in the pack is doing the review preparation work, not just filling boxes.

Architecture Diagrams Target architecture, integration points, and deployment model
Security & Identity Authentication, authorisation, data classification, and access model
Non-Functional Requirements Availability, performance, scalability, and recovery targets
Risk Register Named risks with severity ratings, mitigations, and owners
Cloud & Infrastructure Readiness Deployment model, environment readiness, and infrastructure dependencies
Production Readiness Monitoring, alerting, runbook readiness, and operational handover

Who it is for

The pack is designed for architects and technical leads who are preparing for a formal or semi-formal review. It is useful across a range of review types:

Enterprise architects preparing a solution for ARB review. Solution architects writing HLD documentation before design approval. Technical architects preparing cloud migration proposals. Infrastructure architects seeking sign-off on platform changes. Engineering leads preparing production readiness reviews before go-live. Project teams assembling review documentation before a security or compliance gate.

It is also useful in environments where no formal ARB exists but good review practice is expected — where a technology lead, a CTO, or a principal architect needs to see the decision clearly before giving a view.

How to use it

The pack is a single self-contained HTML file. Open it in any modern browser. Every field is editable in the browser — click a field and type. Checkboxes can be ticked. Risk severity chips can be cycled. Architecture diagrams can be uploaded directly into the diagram section by clicking or dragging.

Entries are saved automatically in the browser using localStorage, so refreshing the page does not lose work. When the pack is complete, it can be exported to PDF using the browser print function, or downloaded as an editable Word file using the built-in export button.

Nothing is uploaded anywhere. Nothing requires an account. The file runs fully offline.

The pack was designed to be filled in before the review meeting — not during it. The point is to arrive with the decision already assembled, not to assemble it in the room.

Feedback welcome

This is an early public version. I have built it around a practical sense of what architecture reviews need — what reviewers ask for, what teams struggle to provide, and what structure tends to produce clearer outcomes. But it reflects one perspective.
